Medical Cannabis in Kentucky

On March 31, 2023, Senate Bill 47 (SB 47) was signed into law, legalizing medical cannabis for Kentuckians beginning Jan. 1, 2025. Cannabis consumption outside of the medical​​ cannabis program remains illegal in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

What are the qualifying medical conditions?

  • ​Any type or form of cancer;
  • Chronic or severe pain;
  • Epilepsy or other intractable seizure disorder; 
  • Multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, or spasticity;
  • Chronic nausea or cyclical vomiting syndrome; or
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder.

We are authorized practitioners that have been assigned by the state of Kentucky to provide written certifications required for obtaining a medical cannabis card. 


  • Be a resident of Kentucky.
  • Have not been convicted of a disqualifying felony offense.
  • Visit an authorized medical cannabis practitioner and receive a written certification to use medical cannabis.
  • Have one of the qualifying medical conditions, which includes:
    • Any type or form of cancer regardless of stage;
    • Chronic, severe, intractable, or debilitating pain;
    • Epilepsy or any other intractable seizure disorder;
    • Multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, or spasticity;
    • Chronic nausea or cyclical vomiting syndrome that has proven resistant to other conventional medical treatments; and
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder. ​


No, visits are out-of-pocket and are not submitted to health insurance.  We charge $199 for the initial certification and $99 for a yearly renewal.  Cannabis Nurse Coaching visits are $75 for a 30 minute session.


  • ​​An initial written certifications for medical cannabis will be valid for 60-days. The issuing medical cannabis practitioner may renew an initial written certification up to 3 additional 60-day periods.
  • After that, the medical cannabis practitioner may issue another initial written certification to the patient only after an in-person examination or an examination conducted via telehealth of the patient.
  • A subsequent written certification issued to renew a registry identification card is valid for 90 days.​​

Yes, the state of Kentucky requires the initial visit to be in-person. After the initial visit, the practitioner-patient relationship may be maintained via telehealth.


  • Review of the qualifying medical cannabis condition for which the medical practitioner believes the patient may receive therapeutic or palliative benefit from the use of medical cannabis
  • Possible medical, therapeutic, and palliative properties of medical cannabis
  • The risks and side effects of medical cannabis, including possible interactions between medical cannabis and other medications
  • Establishment of an expectation that the medical practitioner will provide follow-up care and treatment.


​​​​One (1) year, unless the medical cannabis practitioner indicates that the expiration date needs to be earlier.


The state of Kentucky anticipates that medical cannabis products will be available for purchase at licensed dispensaries in 2025.
